Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad welcomes Delhi court’s verdict to award death penalty to the convicts of 1984 Sikh riots. We believe that justice has finally been served to the victims and their families. The riots that took place after the assassination of Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, wrote a dark chapter in the history of independent India.
It was a matter of despondency that the Sikh riots case made no progress, and was suspiciously closed down by the Delhi Police in 1994 citing lack of evidence. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed in 2015 by the current Union Government under directions of Ministry of Home Affairs reopened the case for detailed investigation. The charge sheet was filed by SIT in January 2017 and two accused have been convicted on November 14, 2018.
Naresh Sehrawat and Jaspal Singh are convicted for murdering two men in South Delhi during anti-Sikh riots. One of the convicts has been awarded death penalty whereas the other has been punished with imprisonment for life by the Patiala House Court.
While welcoming the verdict, National General Secretary of ABVP Shri Ashish Chauhan said, "Ends of justice are finally met. Justice to the victims of Sikh pogrom was long overdue. Such verdicts ensure prevalence of justice over everything else and strengthens people’s faith in judiciary."
